Subject: Bergepanzer 4 Down Again!!! Sat Jan 30, 2016 2:58 pm
So I finally got around to fixing the striped gear on Bergepanzer 4. Turn out I had an extra gearbox that was a perfect match, so an easy swap out.
I threw in a battery to give it a quick test, when I started see smoke, then followed by flames.
As you can see the battery wires are melted and the battery is a lost too.
Not sure if this is the reason, but looks like the one of the battery wires came loose from the power switch.
I think the board might be still good, as the damage seems to be contain to the battery wires. I'll have to wait until my little workshop clears of smoke before I can see what can be done.

Jordan, this is why I re-wired the power switches for all my tanks. There is absolutely no reason why it should be wired the way it is. I know it is easy for trained monkeys to just solder solder solder, but the two positives does not need to be 2 mm away exposed from the negative and disaster.
John, this is exactly what I was talking about this morning if you are reading this.........

I think you will find it was the battery connector that was problem because the fire would have been more in the switch area. this is one reason why i change all my batteries connectors to deans. those white ones suck at the best of time but then again a tank shouldn't draw enough power to melt them in the first place

....well I did INSTALL this one, bah, I just don't remember if I played with the switch or not >< Don't set them on fire!
I've had to resolder them before using a fair amount of flux and get a really nice solid bead between those posts, sometimes it's barely attached.

I agree with Mike , the suppliers of the kits must known the power switch drawing all those amps ,with the close +/- proximity was the wrong choice. I am switching the majority of my tanks for that reason .Some time ago Ian showed me the Deans connector, as did Russel, which is a solid connector. An upgraded power switch seems like a obvious choice . Dean's recent upgrade to Norma's T34 included upgraded power switches sourced from "KW Surplus" at minimal cost . Reduces some of the worry of melt down for her new fav tank.

I'd love a bunch of better switches that fit the same slot HL tanks use.. or just ignore the "-" post and keep just the positive wires on it.

Ya Mike , I read this , couldn't get home fast to plug in my soldering gun , I eliminated my grounds off all my switches , did my mini fuses at same time , thanks for the advice

Russel might right on this. When I place the battery in the battery box I notice the wires were pulled quite tight with a lot of stress on the connectors. So, It might of been my own dumb fault.
Looks like your off the hook Jordan, at least for now.....

Sure just like any other tech service, just fix it enough so it works for a bit and then sucker them in for extra fees when it needs to be fixed.
