Saw these at my local hobby shop:

- Trumpeter 1/16 T-72B - $340 CAD + HST
- Tamiya 1/16 M1A2 Static - $640 CAD + HST
- Tamiya 1/16 Jagd Panther Static - $499 CAD + HST

I didn't even know they sold static versions of the 1/16 Tamiyas

Yup. All the same chassis but without gearbox or electronics. They are quite reasonable. You can get a new Type-10 for example for under $500. Metal lower/suspension/sprockets. It is actually a roller not static. Tamiya calls it display model. Not all of them has it (For example I don't think there is a display version of JS-2).

YUP !!

My Leopard was a display  model, I spent a huge amount of time researching which pieces i needed to make it RC and where to locate all the pieces.

I previously had a 1/16 Tamiya JP that had a simple driveline in it. It could drive forwards when you turned it on. Was lotta fun until I stripped a gear... Long gone (over 20 years ago)
