Hi All,

I'm in the market to get my first tank. So far I'm interested in a HL Leopard and a HL King Tiger.

Are there any pros/cons to each model, or is one more suitable for a beginner? I have a lot of experience in regular RC cars, but not tanks. I'm also not sure whether to invest in metal tracks/wheels right off the bat or wait a bit before upgrading.

Also, are there any local vendors for HL tanks? I've browsed a bit online and Mato Mart seems to be the only place that has decent pricing and is somewhat local to me.

Thanks! Looking forward to the deep rabbit hole of RC tanks, haha.

Erik

Welcome to the addiction!

Heng Long - Cheapest option, plastic lower, upper. Plastic/metal tracks/sprockets/idlers. Gearboxes are OK for plastic tracks. $200-300ish NIB. Needs modifications to make Tamiya IR Battle compatible.

Taigen - Mid range option, Usually Metal Lower, plastic upper. Needs modifications to make Tamiya IR Battle compatible. $400-600ish NIB

Tamiya - The standard for IR battling, expensive option... $700+ NIB. Needs the IR Battle unit usually...

Modifications can be done cheaply (Mako boards, HL/Taigen IR Emitters/Receivers), or more customized work (Clark/IBU board, Tamiya Emitter/Receivers). Plus add in magnetic hull removal, battery & switch relocations, etc...

So bonuses and cons to metal...

The heavier the tank is, the more stresses you have on the gearbox and chassis flex.

Ideal? Steel Gearbox (Not the zinc, but steel), metal sprocket and idlers, plastic tracks.

However heavy gets better traction, lighter floats on grass better...
Metal Tracks look better however.. Smile So all depends on your preference and $ you want to spend...

Welcome Erik.

Matomart is local but they are not retail, and if your order a tank chances are they will come from China directly to you. So the local aspect doesn't really make any difference. If anything you will have to pay HST because they are local.

At the end it really depends on what specs of the King Tiger and the Leo you want. if you are after plastic ones there is one guy in TO that you can do cash and carry, or you can order from Matomart and they MIGHT ship from here depends on whether they have stock or not. I like Matomart, but don't get confused by their website about shipping in 2-3 days. If it comes from China, it will ship in 2-3 days but it still needs to come from half way around the world.

If you are after Taigen brand, then you will be looking at either US or Europe/Asia.

MikeC.

Thanks for the tips, guys!

I understand now about Matomart. I was hoping they had a retail store.

I think I'm leaning towards an all plastic tank just to get started and I'll save up for upgrades as time goes on.

Does the local seller have a website or contact?

I buy from this guy selling out of his basement......... His name is Michael, in the 401/Warden area.

This is his website, you can also try eBay. He will take cash and carry and give you a better price. This is just a sample, I usually just text him for cash and carry pricing.

Hi Erik! If you buy a tank from Matomart, it will be ship out from Barrie. It takes 3 days by Purolator. Tank parts are from China.

It's just a heng long infrared setup in his KT , but has unit in it that makes it compatible with our battling , it's a perfect starter tank , then step up from there as we all did when we started

Hi Eric. I'm just down the street from you. If you decide to go with Heng long, you can buy them from Advance hobby on hwy 7 and Woodbine.
