PostSubject: New tanker   New tanker Icon_minitimeThu Apr 04, 2013 3:52 am

Hello to all. I'm a long time tread head and have been eager to bust into the R/C tank hobby for a while now. Currently I own a WSN Tiger and a T-34. I bought these real cheap second hand and I mostly drive them around with my kids and stuff. I haven't really delved full bore into the hobby because there are no clubs in my current area (Victoria BC). Well that is going to change soon. This spring I will be moving into the Southern Ontario area (Milton). This puts me into a fantastic postion to make regular trips out to Niagra. I am now (or will soon be) in the market for a serious R/C tank.

First, some questions:

What kind of IR system is used out at your field?

Would you recommend a first time tanker to buy a cheaper entry level kit from Mato and upgrade from there or go full bore and buy a Tamiya or other fully upgraded rig (note: I have modeling, mechanical and electronics experience)?

Look forward to getting involved in the months to come.
Thanks.

WELCOME.

We will be happy to see you at the Meets.

It is early and I have to get ready for work, so this will be a bit brief.

We use Tamiya comparable systems, SLU, Clark, etc.

There is a bit of everything on the field, lots of modified Heng Longs, some Tamiya and Taigens.

Personally, I run upgraded Heng Longs and an upgraded Taigern Tiger I (soon to be oined by a second one)

The club's focus is more towards camaraderie and fun, than heavy duty competition.

Welcome to the forum! cheers

Picking a tank comes down to really one question. How much do you want to spend?

Heng Long are your entry level tanks and start around $100. They can be upgraded in stages and be as good as a Tamyia, but are a challenge to mod sometimes.
The most affordable battle system for it is the new Clark board system. http://www.clark-model.com/eng/index_e.html
Your can also get them at Immortal Hobbies too and they also sale tanks and metal gearboxes, which is a must upgrade. http://www.shop.immortalhobbies.com/

There is also the Taigens, similar to Heng Longs, but there are some that come with stronger bottom hulls with quick release. I don't know much about these, but maybe Strato will chime in, he knows more.

And if you have the money and like to build kits, then there is the Tamyia Tanks. They quite good and you can't go wrong with any kit.
The only issue with the is really the price, between $600 to $1000. I personal think that their electronics are out dated and overpriced, but that's another discussion.

No matter what you choose you will need a good 2.4ghz radio system and definitely a good battery if plan on battling.

I hope this helps. If you have any more question just ask. Very Happy

Stince

Some quick info as Im currently running out the door here... Razz

Some Taigens are simple Heng Long rebrands with a quick paint application & radio upgrade, while others like the Tigers, KV series and Panzer III take advantage of the metal hulls & torsion bar suspension that really add to an RC tank and immediately get you into Tamiya quality at less than half the cost. I wish they'd start releasing more metal lower hulls!!

The 'good' Taigens are basically how you would put together Asiatam aftermarket parts to create a heavy HL battle tank. I really like them.

Your WSN tanks are actually a great base to build off from, too. As it sits for about $100 you can throw in a Clark board and wire up an LED emitter and be ready to fight.

Depending on your budget there's a HUGE range of involvement you can reach in this hobby. I personally like to go 'expensive but not Tamiya expensive' in my tanks, and I have a lot of fun putting them together.

Also check out Rc Tank.de and Welsh Dragon Models and in Missisauga from eBay, Rc Dynasty (this is actually Mato's better online store, it's cheaper) for an excellent source of upgrades, parts and such, I've had an excellent experience with all those vendors, and also Immortal (Curtis!) and the Clark guys mentioned by Stince, whom I highly recommend!

Come down to a meet when you can, you'll basically get a taste of EVERYTHING that the hobby can offer!

My initial plan was to work on converting the WSN T-34 into a serious RC tank. To this end I have aquired a set of metal gears (CustomRCmodels). I don't think they are 1/3 reduction ratio or anything though. I had also thought of replacing the motors but was worried the tank would end up being too zippy.

Other things on my hit list of items to track down:
-Metal idler suspension system (CustomRCmodels).
-Metals tracks.
-Track adjustor (henntec?).
-Electronics. Was thinking of SLU or Clark (sources?).
-Battery (2000 nih is the way to go?).
-2.4 g transmitter (reccommendations?).
-High flash and speed recoil system (asiatam?).
-Better quality speaker (required?).

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

this was my T-34 i still do stuff to it here and there just paint mostly but the change of adding metal gears and new electroncs was a lot of work i still need a better recoil and elevation i have an HL one and it don't work so well but it's good until i have money and time to do it

You might be better off keeping a T-34 lighter, I don't recall if anyone uses the metal tracks for it in the club but I do not think so.

Track Tensioners, I have the same type in my Tiger, they're bulletproof.

Clark's are awesome at the moment. For another $30 you get 2 micro servos and they take care of both your recoil and elevation, no asiatam box required (although I do have one in my kv-2!!) SLU is also awesome, while I own 3 of them, I'm not sure on their availability as of late Sad

I use 5100 NiMH batteries but, like Ive said, my tanks are bloody heavy compared to most others, and I need the extra fuel Wink

The newer Turnigy radios & receivers are not only incredibly inexpensive, they work awesome. I think Curtis (at Immortal) stocks the 9x with receivers. I'm no expert on them but I've seen good things.

the HL strobe flash unit is really nice. It plugs right into the Clark / SLU and works right away.

Yes, at the Can Am RC Tank club, the field is outdoors, on grass. We make every effort to cut the grass as short as possible but from my observations, the heavier stuff can have some difficulties on the grass.

I am pleased with my Tigers and Panthers with plastic tracks and 3:1's, the plastic tracks hold up well and the tank does not bog down; just my experience, others may differ.

Forgive my ignorance as I break into this hobby but I'm trying to determine what kind of battery to get for my build. I'm looking at getting a pair of 7.2v 5000 NiMH battery's with Tamiya style connectors. Will these connect fine to a Clark board? Is the Tamiya connector the standard for these tanks? I noticed that you can get batteries with different voltages. Is this critical? Also, is there a charger that is recommended?

Thanks again.

Hey there! Welcome aboard. I hope you're building something roomy like a Tiger or KT, 2 5000's will fit but they'd be tight. I use these bad boys Dynamite 5100 and they work very well, NiMH is suited nicely to tanks.

Tamiya connectors are standard.

Taken right from the Clark site, its range is 7.2 - 7.4v, so I wouldn`t attempt something like a 2S LIPO.

I`ve been in RC for awhile so a couple of years ago I bought a Triton EQ digital charger. It is fast, reliable, and safe. It`s not the most expensive, but IMO a good investment anyway. It has different modes for NiCad, lead acid, LiPO, NiMH.

the charger i use is the Sckycharger 6200. you need to but a power suppy for it or do what i did and use a old power supply from a computer
I don't know any think about the clark Boards since i have tamiya guts in my tank but i use 1 Reedy LiPo 2400mAh 7.4V 20C with a Voltmeter. my one will beep at when its getting low

so what tank do you have

I have a WSN T-34 and Tiger. I'm going to work on totally re-fitting the T-34 into a good runner. Not sure if I'm going to keep the Tiger yet.
