I've never had a build thread for this guy, basically because I've had it since.. forever.

Anyway I just added some 480's from Curtis to it, so I felt like opening it up for some pictures too.

I was comparing my KV-2 to this Tiger, and in flat out speed they were equal. Turning in grass however, the Tiger really bogged down. Probably a mix of gearbox tuning and track layout, so I opted to put the motors I had into the Tiger.

Strato's Tiger 20130510

Anyhoo, overall equipment is as follows :

Asiatam Tiger 'early' metal hull (These are now Taigen early hulls),
Rubber rimmed early style road wheels
HL Metal sprockets, Idlers, AND Tracks. I don't think they even sell these anymore...
Mato 2.0 3:1 gearboxes
Promaxx 480 motors,
Tiger SLU,
Stock elevation & rotation, HL Upper hull.

Nice arrangement of the SLU.

Were there any problems fitting the larger motors?

Not particularly, I removed their protective 'shield', with the lable on it so they would clear more easily. Also I had to grind down a tiny bit of the gearbox side because the motors are slightly wider too, but I'm talking about 1-2mm at most, you could do it with a small file in no time.

Reinstalling the gearboxes, they seemed to be binding up something fierce, so I took them out again, cleaned them & even slightly sanded down a couple of the gears that were clearly meshing too tightly. I found this odd because I've had these gearboxes the longest, and they should be broken in.. the dead-resistance of the new motors is a lot higher so, turning the sprockets by hand is tough. I think the motors themselves need a bit of a break in period.

The spin nicely now.

Now, I just bent a drive shaft (3rd time on this Tiger)... but it wasn't really a rough impact. I bumped a wall. It's almost laughable but now I have a wobbly sprocket & gear. Sigh, new shafts again... ><

480 should be a good choice for 4:1 gear box!

So, some of you may have read I did a quick timed course last week when someone on RCU asked how fast the 4:1s were compared to the mato 3:1s. I timed my KV-2 (4:1s) and TIger (3:1s), and they ended up being the same speed.. exactly... roughly 28 seconds over ~50ft-ish.

With the 480s... 31-32 seconds. It's slower. Weird.

I'll charge the battery up and try again Razz

Thats shaft #3 to go on my Tiger. She's too heavy, or the Mato shafts are too weak. Oh well.

Considering my options now Very Happy

The broken ones are brass, yea. Mato 3:1s.

The black steel ones have STEEL drive shafts, and they're thicker, too. It's whats in my KV-2.

Options right now:

Replace Mato shafts with OEM steel shafts, if available.

New gearboxes : Waltersons? Taigen 4:1s? We'll see.

If I win the lottery, these Modellspiegel gears will be nice too...

Strato do you think the metal tracks are putting to much stress on the axials?

Oh, definately, and probably the fact that I had them set pretty tight for a long time too.

What broke this axel was set in motion when I bumped the corner of a concrete wall, and the drive sprocket bent backwards slightly..

I hammered it straight (you can't heat-harden brass, it just gets softer...), and that worked for awhile but it eventually failed Sad

Taigen 4:1s are coming soon!!

The Taigen 4:1s I ordered from Tank Army in Australia, finally installed...

They are QUIET, I like them. Very tough and everything lined up & ran fine on the first try.

Track / sprocket issues no longer exist... I have the tracks set fairly loosely now, and I couldn't get them to slip off even when trying.

These are definately SLOWER than Mato 3:1 gears. Over a set distance I recorded a travel time of 33-35 seconds, vs 30-31 seconds with the Mato's.

Well some of the newer guys and I bet a few regulars might not even know I have a Tiger... it`s been sitting in the garage awaiting many repairs, upgrades and some maintenance.

So, new pictures and a video. This is the new Taigen turret that includes the asiatam recoil & elevation unit, high power flash unit & is overall a pretty awesome product. Great moldings and the metal barrel is very nice to see.

Anyhoo my Tiger is now fully functional with a Clark TK-22, Taigen 4:1 steel gears & the new turret. Russian armor be damned, I`m coming for you.

Not sure if I'll put the 480s back in just yet but I might eventually do a side-by-side comparison to see the actual performance difference. My KV-2 has the stock motors and it stops for nobody..!
This is the plastic turret with metal barrel.

Yeah fair enough... I have found in my tamiya tanks especially the heavies the 480 work best when down to the last 1 or 2 lives, the tank still has the ability to crawl along and over obstacles but its not an issue in the lighter tanks like the pershing or kv... Very Happy  Love the tank though mate

One often overlooked feature of the Clark's is the adjustable speed reduction when damaged. My heavy tanks I usually set at 37.5% reduction (thats 62.5% of full motor power) and once I'm 50% dead I still come to a dead crawl and can hardly move.

With our club's field being mainly grass covered it makes sense. I try to keep things fair of course, there's no way my Tiger or KV-2 is going to outrun or out-turn another tank while damaged so the playing field is still even.

Anyway my Tiger is now full armed, upgraded and operational. Woe is the enemy.

See you all in October... Very Happy  viking grin
