PostSubject: MK VII / Last Crusade WW1 Tank    MK VII / Last Crusade WW1 Tank Icon_minitimeSat Jun 23, 2012 11:20 am

This project will take a long time, I think. Just to gather the parts! I estimate I'll need 3x PnzIII sets of tracks, 2x sets of wheels (so 24 road wheels altogether) and 2 sets of sprockets, a powered pair at the rear and sort of an idler set at the front, with adjustable tension. Probably just an RX-18. Turret rotation... meh.. did the thing even rotate in the movie? Wink

I plan to have the track return over the top without any rollers, following the groove between the inner and outer hull side channels. I think that'll be fine with plastic tracks. Road wheels will ride on 7/32" brass tube, same diameter as the P3 axles. The centre deck and probably the entire 'engine compartment' will be held down by magnetic hatches for easy access. The main issue now is bracing, as this is 2mm polystyrene sheet or something similar, it is rigid but will flex under load.

Anyway, pictures!

You might want to consider return rollers on the top to cut down the friction of the track.

Stince, that's definitely a possibility, and as it looks if I can get the thing to work, I'll test it with and without return wheels. I'm not even sure if the MK VIII had them... I hope i can find a cheap supply! Wink

Anyway, new pics.

Strato, I don't know if this any help to you, but here is a link to one some guy built as a static display. It might give you a few ideas.

http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-joe-customs-finished-projects/154534-indiana-jones-mk-vii-tank.html

Check out the second page for the build pictures.

The back end will be fully enclosed and the gearbox will sit right in the back. I just haven't designed that yet Wink

The length of this thing will make turning on anything other than concrete be a chore, if it works at all!

Time to go work on it some more Smile

New pics Smile

I secured the 'outer' sides to the main hull, with blocks of wood CA'd in between plastic sheet layers. It's about an inch gap, just enough for the PnzIII tracks to fit at the ends.

Also repositioned the side casemate guns higher up to match the movie tank. Raised the floor about 1-1/4 inches to allow more ground clearance. Phew! MK VII / Last Crusade WW1 Tank Photo110 Front!

looking good looks cool what are you going to use for the gears and electronics for your side guns you might want to use the containers we use for the SLU apple then they could turn inside

Just because one time, I went to buy a tank from a guy but declined, because I missunderstood, he said he was selling a SHERMAN tank, not a German tank. Laughing

I'd like to see that set up with an SLU and IR and taken to Dannville Wink

You think the electronics could handle the stepped up amperage from 3 IR emitters in parallel? Razz

One rotating turret. What if I could have a 'crew' who manned the casement guns independently? Bahahaha... Wink

When funds allow I'll probably stick the basic HL running gear into it, nothing fancy. The side guns are mounted in halves of a spray paint cap Wink

New Pics Smile

Scratch building is hard Twisted Evil Nothing on this tank is quite perfect, but it fit's nicely! Its a good mix of bits from the movie, the actual MK VIII, and stuff I'm making up.

New stuff includes tow shackles, rivet panel lines / side detailing, and that cattle bar / rack that was on the movie tank Razz

I think I might go out and buy a small piece of aluminum or steel plate for the gearbox mount.

By then I might have some painting done, and some moderate detail work. I need something to simulate about 10 billion rivets Wink

They do make scale rivets....in several different scales. I think the last time I bought them, they were in packs of 100. If your'e interested, I can probably dig up the info.

Did some detail work, added some plates & openings as observed in the movie. I spent some time watching Last Crusade and paused it a lot, sharpie marker in hand to highlight where things go!

Major work this time was shortening the front end of the track assembly. It was too long / too far forward, and the angle wasn't steep enough so I just hacked & sanded them down. Looks a lot better !

It still pretty much looks just like that!

It has the radio antenna & parascope that were visible in the movie now.

Engineering wise I have to design a good way to mount some gearbox's on it, and the Rx-18 & tracks and a few other parts...

Whats stumping me is a good way to make the front idler wheels adjustable, or under some spring tension so that they always exert a force forward, keeping the tracks taught..

Working on it!!

Progress!

I put a coat of grey primer on, looks sharp.

Ordering a complete Pnz3 from HobbyKing, for parts (Rx-18, tracks, roadwheels). Turns out I'll only need a second set of Pnz3 tracks to equip the entire tank, so total parts cost will be under $90. Not bad.

Now I need a 5x6" piece of metal to mount the drive unit's onto... Very Happy

Im ordering some parts from MATO now, since the shipping for a P3 from Hobbyking was about $70... yikes! They don't carry HL tanks in their USA warehouse Sad

Anyway, I primed it, and took some detail photos.
