Hello,

As I have posted on intro board, I am totally new at RC Tank.

After about two weeks or thinking over and over... I have picked up a Heng Long Tiger 1 Sound/Smoke RTR.

My question is... what new hardwares do I need to convert this to a IR Battle ready (tamiya compatible) to be able to join you guys at BattleDay meet?

It seems that Clark TK22 board is the most popular?
Which brand/model of IR Reciever (aka Apple) can I use?  It seems Tamiya brand is very expensive at over $100.    Can I use Heng Long IR Receiver? (I think it was like $14 on ebay).
I guess I would need a IR LED, some wires/plugs.

Also, barrel recoil, what would be a good way to go about it?

I've checked ImmortalHobbie website but it seems to be non operational.

I would really appreciate it if someone could help me give me a list of parts that is required and recommended?

Oh... if I go the Clark TK22 route... will I be needing a new Radio system aswell?

If I can get things moving quick... I'll try my best to join the next Battleday Very Happy

xxgg,

Clark Tk-22 series would probably be your best bet as it is relatively "cheap and dirty". Tamiya battle unit (i.e. IR receiver) is probably the best of the lot, but many of us use the Heng Long ones as well with no problem. For the IR emitter LED you will need to make sure you get one that has the matching wave length) but it escapes me right now what that is (I think it is 980nm).

Barrel recoil is a little bit of a dark art as everyone does it a little different, however since you have a Tiger I and you might end up with a Clark board it would be a good idea to check out Clark's new 3D Print recoil kit for the Heng Long Tiger I as it looks quite easy to install.

Lastly, you will need a hobby grade radio system for the Clark board, really any 4-5 channel system would do, but you will want one that has throttle self centering stick as most heli package radio would have non centering throttle stick. You can get a cheap one from HobbyKing but will have to switch out the non-self centering gimble with a self center one. RCTA is a good place for a complete RTR run Turnigy package for the Clark and it is even programmed with tank menu rather than heli menu.

Thank you very much for the reply.

I guess there just isn't any shop in Canada for these parts?

Shipping cost from RCTA store is almost as much as the radio. Wow.

Since Group purchase of Clarks seems to be over, I guess I would need to buy stright from Clark... if available.
If I shop directly from Clark, is there anything I should buy at same time?

IR side of things are still confusing to me.   Terms, lingos...

Thank you for reply!

Michael, unfortunately this is definitely an International hobby to say the least. The only thing I managed to get locally are small electronic parts like resistors, switches, speakers and generic stuff. Otherwise it is all eBay, HobbyKing, RCTA, for the electronics and Europeans for custom uppers and parts.

There is a local guy in Scarboro that you can get stock Heng Long tanks and parts for a reasonable price. Mato is actually in Markham but they don't do retail walk-ups and you have to order them online/eBay but if you are in Toronto it will get to you the next day for reasonable shipping cost.

Try my website

http://battlearmorrc.weebly.com

Located in Canada with the least expensive option of adding Tamiya compatible to Heng
long tanks.

I have a lot of tutorials as well

Best upgrade out of the gate is a low ratio gearbox.  Keep as much stuff as you can In plastic if you want a good battling IR tank.

Also Hobby king T6A radios are great for tanks . Six channel programmable radio for under 30 bucks. Get the programming cable and there is a guy in Sask that sells the self centering kits for about 8 bucks The nice thing about these radios is they have six proportional channels allowing you many control options

Cheers

Xxgg even if you don't have a tank ready in time for our next Battleday come anyway, it's the best way to learn more about the hobby and usually someone has a spare tank you can try.

xxgg did you figure out how to take the top off the Tiger ? There is also 4 screws on the side above the tracks. You will have to remove the tracks before getting them thtu the bogies. Easiest way would be to remove the sprockets with a hex driver and take the tracks off.

Yes... that is what most of the pictures, video show.

But my version is different.

Two at bottom back, two at mid bottom & two at front under the track bumper thingy (I didn't realize it was hidden there).

Darn it, you sold your 9X.

Glad you figure it out. By the way Nova Hobby (Michael) is the dude in Scarboro that I was talking about so you are already in the loop........

Yeah, the 9X Turnigy would have been perfect for you as it comes with a receiver and the tank firmware. You just need a Clark board and you are set.

Yeah...

I think I am ready to give this tank to my nephew as planned.

Now starting eye shopping for my tank...

Btw... is Clark board fairly safe with running LiPo?  There must be someone who could make a addon board to be placed between the motherboard and battery to act as low voltage cut off.

Would be so nice if tank rc was as popular as rc crawler/scaler.

xxgg, I used LiPo on all my tanks for battle or testing. When they get put away I stick a high amp NiMH in them. Clark doesn't have a fuse and it does not have a low voltage cutoff so you will need to stick a low vol alarm in there.

You might want to keep an eye open on the forum as there is always something interesting for sale. I am thinking of downsizing myself also.

MikeC.
