For all you Tamiya guys out there, question from a novice........ Is there a IR battle connection in the MF-01 unit, or do you need extra pieces of electronics to make it IR battle ready ? I know you need the base and apple and stuff, but I am just wondering if there is another piece of electronics control/board that you need or if the connection comes out of the MF-01 unit.

Hi Mike,
The Tamiya electronics consist of two parts, the MF board and the DMD board.

The receiver is a 5-pin plug that plugs into the CN1 slot and the IR is a 2-pin plugs into the CN2 slot, both are found on the MF board.

You can find the PFDs manuals for the tanks here. http://www.tamiya.com/english/rc/manuals.htm The tank manuals are near the bottom.

Okay so I still need the DMD Control unit (T-03) even with this set then ? This is so confusing.

The DMD board is pretty much a ESC board, it controls the motors.

The SLU and the DBU were like that too, one board for the motors and one for rest of the features.
We are spoiled with all-in-one board from Clark.

I like the fact that Tamiya cleverly hided the control board underneath the speaker so it looks like this kit is all you need to run the tank.

Well technically it is an added option, because you could just run the tank with the DMD board, it just would have any sound, recoil, or IR  system.
Both boards are usually included in the kits, yours may of been an added option for an earlier kit that didn't include it.

If you bought it for the price on the box then that's a great deal, they are normally 3 times that amount.

Okay, so if that's the case, then I could in theory use a Clark board as a ESC with 2 channels controlling the movement, and use the MF-01 for everything else then with the other two channels ?

A new Clark board is still cheaper than a Tamiya DMD controllers..........
