..up at Sauble Beach yesterday, the water had receded about a KM from the 'normal' shore and it was all flat and hard, lots of fun with the Tiger splashing through puddles and such Razz

Take it back to the campsite, onto some 'regular' dry sand.. and I sheared a drive shaft! Whoa! What a god awful noise that made. So, where to get spares? Razz

for the 3:1 brass drive Mato was able to send me replacement. I also have a lath and made my own from steel. Just in case the brass replacement sheared again.

ok, speaking of gears, what's the best replacement. Brass gears or full Steel gears? Is there also stainless gears? I'm going to be getting a set for my Tiger...opinions?

I was checking my tank drives today and I noticed a wobble in one of the gears . I remember you pointed the same thing out on your Tiger at the last battle day. It seems my other 3:1 gear set has the same condition in one of the gears . It seems the gear was pressed onto the shaft with a bit of skew which gives them a wobble . This adds additional strain to the drive assembly which you can hear when it runs ( when compared to a good set )
I remember being puzzeled when I sheared my original drive shaft because the rear hub is screwed to just a plastic post and why did it not fail first?
Anyway I hope Mato found you a replacement drive shaft .

Drive shafts arrived, they are nice!

However the support bearing(s) are shot, I'm pretty sure to my own 'persuasion' removing the old broken one, but, hey, I'll chalk it up to the event that did the original damage! Blah

So, I emailed Mato asking if they have the bearings too. Can't wait to see what they expect me to pay for them.... yeesh...

Anyone have the up-and-up on bearings & be able to tell me what kind / size Mato uses??

The gear set does come with some nice ball bearings on the final drive axel , However when mine blew out I thought perhaps with metal tracks were just too much of a load on them so I replaced one side with a 6 mm wide brass bushing as a test .So far both are working.

Interesting... did you make your own bushings or buy them?

I'd like to know what you did here. I was thinking of soldering a few layers of brass hobby tube together... that's if the driveshafts and gearbox's are metric..

I turned my own bushing. But the tube idea sounds interesting as well . If you go that route I will be interested how it turns out.

Found an excellent source for the bearings required for the Mato 2.0 - 3:1s a lot of us use!

Bearings

Most other sites were charging 3-10$ for the same sized bearings... these are $1.

I ordered 10, for about $15 with shipping.

Hoping the quality doesn't reflect the price! Razz

Hey Hulu, I put in a new bearing today, it helps to have a pair of large pliers or a vice to press them in, its a snug fit but they slide in nicely. Proper size is 5mm inner, 8mm outer, 2.5mm wide & flanged.

Removing them is more delicate. I used a 5/16 brass punch (which is nearly almost exactly 8mm) and very gently tapped them out with a small hammer. Patience doing this! Make sure you're lined up straight or the bearing will be damaged.

Anyway with the new drive shaft, I took some scotch bright & a small file to smooth it out, and they sit in the bearings nicely. Again if the shaft is not smooth, you can damage the bearings. Theyre very delicate!

I have my drive assembled now and it's good as new, no wobble or play in the shaft. I'll have pictures soon!

Wow, so guess what?

I was driving around in the sand... Photo140

The OTHER side's driveshaft failed... The track snagged in a wayward towel on the floor, drove 2 feet, then only made right turns.

Luckily I had the extra from Mato.

Seems they do suffer from gradual stress, and eventually fail... Granted I drive like a maniac with an above average weight tank.

Anyway, repaired, good as new, 400 motors installed. I know the failure point now!

*edit* I have removed my metal tracks... I've taken the general advice I hear and will reserve them for 'parade days' only. FYI, 2 metal Tiger tracks weigh in at 3 pounds... thats 22% LESS weight on my tank & transmissions now, overall.

I hear you .I like the weighty feel to the tanks but not the repairs .

Then again, 3 lb of metal winter tracks with cleats will let you climb out of any ravine and keep you upright

Thats a good point. On the Sherman and Panzer III, metal tracks are a good idea. Simply because they are smaller tracks, they wont weigh 3 pounds!! And they'll keep the C of G nice and low. I'm leaving the metal tracks on my Panzer for now, they run fine.

New presents came in the mail today!

For $15 (including shipping) I got 10 bearings, and a really nice decal sheet Great packaging, the little plastic tube is even threaded.

...and my KV-2 Tamiya speaker (first Tamiya part bought EVER...!) ... Hooked it up to my Tiger... WHOA!! The cat ran away so fast, I've yet to find him Sad Very loud super crisp sound. From "Jason's" eBay store, Japan.
