Hey all, I worked together a simply 1 piece aluminum shield for the Tamiya sensor to block hits coming from directly infront and slight angles left and right. Remember any TD taking the field is allowed to block it's sensor in front.

I'd like to test it out at the field under different conditions in September.

Feel free to comment and make suggestions, as this is fairly rough but it seems to work.

It`s held on by magnets to the screws on the TBU.

I like it, simple and easy to transfer among tanks, how easy does it spin? ie. if i crash into a tree or building or wall etc. will i have an imunity to side or rear shots. And this really make me want to have an Elephant with on of these. I would only have to worry about the super fast T-34's and the Leo 2 out on the field. Smile

Hah! Well I drove it around and it didn't move.. but I'd say if you drive under a tree or bush it will probably move although it tends to slide back into it's proper position.

I have seen guys use black tape to do this.  This is a different spin on it.  Again discussion will need to take place within a club to determine, exactly how this will be used and what tanks are allowed to have it.

Ie if you allow this total frontal protection, do you run the TD as a medium or light, so if people do flank you they have a chance to take you out.

My feeling is anything without a pivoting turret or gun mount would be eligible. Since we use mostly Clark boards now, the shield could be used in combination with # of hits and damage so it would be no problem to make the SU-76i more vulnerable than a JT by adjusting this. Tamiya systems would be the same, set for light or medium or heavy.

We for sure will be trying this out at the next meet in Sept. If Jordan only brings this one we can do anyone else's with tape just to try the concept. Jordan and I have also made a gentleman's agreement to eliminate the super spin on all our tanks including our TD's and will try to convince the rest of the gang to do likewise.

Our field is somewhat unique because of the grass and I think once the big lumbering JagdTiger (that I've noticed seem to be multiplying...!!) show up, the question of hits vs damage won't matter.. they simply won't be able to out-turn a medium tank. For now it seems appropriate to maintain the rule of reload time = number of hits.

That is unless it's a Tamiya that runs at 40mph Wink

Now a Stug or SU-76/100 with 4-6 hits will only be able to take 2-3 shots before it's in damaged mode. I think a successful flank on a TD will quickly render it's frontal immunity useless... so protect those TD's, theyre an asset!! Razz

I like that this is stirring discussion though! The idea the from the beginning was to encourage different styles of play and tactics, so far so good.

I love the idea Jordan.

If the cover has an issue spinning/twisting you could try a two magnetic setup or Velcro.

Super spin is bad for gearboxes... I'm fairly certain most people's mechanical issues, including throwing tracks, is because of how Clark handles turning in 'default' mode. /sigh

Here is my shielding on the Stug. I did some testing and it will not take hit from the front but side shoots are registering . ( I know the commander is standing pretty tall having his Schweinefleisch sandwich and if we had snipers on the field this would be a problem .) The front hit indicator led can be seen in the commander's belly

This is getting me interested in updating my Stug, or JP.

I wanted to revive this one.

One potential project I am looking at is converting my BB HL Jagdpanther to IR with a Clark and setting it up with a Tamiya receiver.

One of the key parts of this decision process is whether or not we are good with using something like Strato's excellent looking shield on a tank destroyer, as shown in the first post.

I believe we are good with it but would hate make one up, then find out there is a problem.

I believe the rule is that if there is no turret then the destroyer shielding can be applied. Even with the shielding it is a challenge to stay alive.

My first attempt was to duplicate Strato's shielding and it worked fine but I rather think the Stug Commander works just as good.

Hey Ed, I'd be curious to where you would put the lights if it was a female commander. Wink

Thread resurrection! I am interested in a couple of these as I am getting a pair of KT Clark boards for my kids' Jadgpanthers. So I think that these would be cool.

Just read through this. Very interesting and creative! One question though. Have you had any problems with the magnets interfering with the electronics? I've had personal experience with magnetism making automation do some unexpected things.
