Electronics in a 1/6 Dragon Sherman. Empty
PostSubject: Electronics in a 1/6 Dragon Sherman.   Electronics in a 1/6 Dragon Sherman. Icon_minitimeSat Jun 11, 2022 3:34 am

I think this is my first post, not sure when I signed up but back then in Australia we had bushfires, worst in history, then COVID and finally the worst floods in history all this during when I signed up here and being an emergency responder I was too busy to even think about RC things.
I am now able to get back into RC tanking.
My issues are for the tank above , I am selecting electronic parts for the build , I have 2 radios an old DX6i I flew on Heli's for years and a Turnigy TGY-i6S with 2 RX's a TGY-iA6B and a TGY-iA6C so I can go PWM or PPM or serial Bus . the idea is to be SBUS/IBUS once I understand it a bit better.
I have a Sabertooth 2X12 for 2x12V DC motors to be stand alone or driven by a tank board motor controller . The type the Spyker fellow recommends https://skycraftsurplus.com/gear-head-dc-motor-12vdc-worm-drive-right-hand-configuration-right-h-12v-sk4640.html a very nice chap he is too.
My Q is which boards have an output to drive the Sabretooth ? I know the Open Panzers could but they are dead now I think. Which boards have a Serial Port 2 capability again OP had them but they're finished I think.
And which boards could drive a 1/6 scale Dragon Sherman by themselves it won't be too heavy probably the weight of an all metal KT2 I'd say somewhere between 15KG and 20KG depending on batteries which are 12v Gell Cell type for reference.
A board that can handle 12V lead acid or Gell Cell and can power those motors by itself would be great as my knowledge base is closer to that small input. Also if anyone want to sell me an older 12V board in working condition that they're not using I would be happy to buy so I'm not frying a brand new board, just for function tests it's not the end game TCB
Any help would be greatly appreciated .
Cheers .

Good Day , I use the Sabertooth 2x25 for my 1/16 Stuart and I go directly in to the speed control from the radio with a Y connector also in to a tank control board strictly for the tank sound option. I use the 12 V on the speed control and a separate (7.2) battery for the tank control system . Lots of room in the bigger tanks for two battery's. I am experimenting with using a 18v drill battery in my tank I know the ESC can take it and hope to increase the tanks speed or get a 12V with more Amp out put.

Cheers Captain thx you for your input , yes I can do that with the SpeKtrum DX6i being a PWM type but can I do that with an IBUS/SBUS protocol . I'm new to the IBUS thing and really want to go that way if I can but if not yes I'll use the DX6i and It's RX As I said I've seen Open Panzer boards drive a Sabertooth and the Ozzy ASP series but both of those makes are all done I believe. Both those boards had the Serial Port 2 to drive the Sabertooths , do you know of a board with that protocol at all Cap ?I'm not an IR battle tank guy as I'm playing at 1/6 scale for the moment.
Cheers Captain ,don't we have to pipe the Captain when he comes up the gangway lol.
Appreciated thx again mate .

love The 1/6 stuff.I have the Dragon Sherman kit and PZ 2 when I get to RC it up I will make a sheet metal insert for it to give it some strength so it will handle the up grade.

I do not know about using the IBUS on the boards and I do not think the smaller board would handle the draw of a 12v set up. I just come directly off the radio receiver to the Sabertooth.
Good luck on the project...

I might have found a cheap solution. solution using this https://www.flyingtech.co.uk//electronics/8ch-pwm-ppm-encoder-ppm-input-fc-pixhawk-apm from a Y lead with a PWM go to the Sabertooth with the wires needed and on the other side of the Y lead go with this product to a TCB with IBUS/SBUS input.

Cheers Captain.
