I'm new to this, but did go ahead and purchase a Torro King Tiger a few months ago.  I really enjoy running it in the yard and the sound effects, movement, and durability so far have been very good.  I'm thinking/hoping  having another one for some IR tank battles would be even more fun.  Does anyone have any experience with the Torro IR battle system?  Or any experience with the universal IR receiver offered on MotionRC?  Or heck, IR tank battles in general?  Looking forward to ANY thoughts or experiences.

Greetings and welcome to the addiction! Where are you located? the Torro/Taigen/HengLong IR systems are mediocre at best and absolutely horrible outside on a sunny day. 

all we do in our club is IR battles. :-) Been that way for 15 years. If you don't want to play in a regulated environment but just want to mess around with a couple of tanks not only replacing the receiver must be done but the emitter should be upgraded as well. you might want to take a look at this system from me, Dean, a member here as well as a vendor... :-)

And of course if you want to compete to international standards that will require a further upgrade to your MFU's either Clark, ElMod, IBU's, etc... but that is another discussion! :-)

I have a Torro King Tiger as well and have not regretted switching out the electronics THX to Dean and MikeD. This move takes it from a toy to something that can actually battle.

I guess it all depends on what you want the KT to do and how invested you are in this hobby.

Also have to say get a 4000mah + battery; your run time will greatly increase  

Thanks for the insight guys. I really doubt I would get into the deep end of the pool with this, I'd just like to have some 1 on 1 tank battles with friends and the wife in a decent size yard. It sounds like I should go with Dean's upgraded IR system. I have to decide on another tank first, leaning toward the late state Tiger.

Side note, I emailed a question to MotionRC about the range of the Torro IR Battle system. I asked if it had to be in very close range, what is the effective distance,? They replied "I guess you can assume that, I have no way to test to confirm " .....outstanding.....

I would try out the Torro system first with two tanks before upgrading. It might be good enough for your purpose. Also don't forget these are WWII era tanks. The hit rate is not exactly high so it will also be historically accurate.
