yep the SS An Armored Engineer Vehicle "SS"... Japanese WWII. SS had following nine functions; (1)destruction of pillbox, (2) digging trench, (3)mine sweep, (4)destruction of wire entanglements, (5)disinfection, (6)scattering poison, (7)flamethrow, (8)crane, (9)smoke discharge, and a bridgelaying function was added later. On the upper photo, two stick-like projections in front of the vehicle and in the side of vehicle are flamethrowers. The wheels on the top of the hull are the device for loading a bridge. i guess this thing did everything...lol

...random thought, lately on TV and around the internet I've been seeing lots of pictures (and a cooking show...??) with Japanese tanks just sitting on the edge of the jungle, in the middle of towns, etc.. just sitting there...
Think we can scrounge up some cash and bring one over? BWAHAHAA

It's a Japanese Chi-Ri Prototype, captured by the US in 1945.

Ahhh I was thinking Japanese...
That thing is a beast. Although it looks to be pretty much a KV with a Mitsubishi engine.

that is Bis B1 captured and turned into a geshutzwagen ( spelling is off ) and pressed into service. They put a 10.5cm howitzer on it. At least that is what my 2 cents says anyway.
If anybody ever gets bored of doing tank models they can always turn to captured vehicles. Russian and Germans were known too press fit to use enemy product into service. Germany actually sent some of the tanks back, retrofitted and sent them back to the front for use.

OK then what is this? This is a tough one so here is an added bonuis, I have a copy of Shephard Paines " How to build dioramas " books. Mint condition and about 32 years old so for the right collector this book is worth something. Still has the $19.95 price sticker on it from the underground modeler. who ever guesses right gets the book, they pay the shipping.http://www.flickr.com/photos/94760014@N04/9010868481/
