| Hey all, I've been messaging a couple people on RCU and reading up on past build threads on making a decent halftrack for use in combat! I'm interested in the Sdkfz250 /251 type of German. Does anyone have any experience or interest in similar projects? Ideally I could persuade at least one other person to attempt one, get a couple custom Clark's installed, and use them as scouts in battle. Let me know what you guys think!! _____________________________________________ Tiger I - Panzer II - Panzer III - Panzer IV - Chi Nu Kai - Panther G - KV-1b 756(r) M4A3(76) Sherman - T-34/85 - M3 Grant - SECRET PROJECT

| I've been wanting to do this for a long time. I have a couple of static half-tracks that I thought about converting, I think the Clark would be perfect for it. _____________________________________________ HL Panzer III | HL Tiger | HL Jagdpanther | HL Panther | Mato Sherman Hooben Elefant | HL Pershing | HL Bergepanzer IV | Tamiya Leopard 1A | WSN T-34 HL "Golden" Pan-Tiger | M16 Halftrack | HL Panzer IV | Tamiya KV-1 | Tamiya Tiger

| Derek the main hurdles I've come across are these...
The common 21s Century / Soldiers of Valor static versions seem to be out of production... and average about $140 on eBay... whoa!!
I can't find a reliable / affordable source of motors and gearboxes for them, yet. The best source is from the 1/24 Vs Tank series but alas, so far haven't found a vendor for just the parts. $150 again on eBay for just the tank! ><
The best control option would be a Clark, and a digital radio with aileron / rudder mix. That way your steering will control the wheels AND tracks at the same time...
If we can eventually each build one, I think it'll be cool to add into the battles. _____________________________________________ Tiger I - Panzer II - Panzer III - Panzer IV - Chi Nu Kai - Panther G - KV-1b 756(r) M4A3(76) Sherman - T-34/85 - M3 Grant - SECRET PROJECT

| Engines galore!! http://www.rctoybay.net/SearchResults.asp?Search=Engine&Search.x=14&Search.y=5Wow that smalljoes.com actually carries some neat stuff, specifically the 1/18 scale tanks that also have been used to power a few half track conversions... if you wanted the gears and also a cool looking static display / battlefield prop, that'll work too. Not bad. I'll probably be ordering the gears from rctoybay.net, great find. _____________________________________________ Tiger I - Panzer II - Panzer III - Panzer IV - Chi Nu Kai - Panther G - KV-1b 756(r) M4A3(76) Sherman - T-34/85 - M3 Grant - SECRET PROJECT

| That's a nice find on the gearboxs. I'll do some quick measurements of my German half-track for you when I get home tonight. Also I was just wondering, do the tracks have to work independently from each other. It's not like a half-track can pivot turn without ripping off the front tires. _____________________________________________ HL Panzer III | HL Tiger | HL Jagdpanther | HL Panther | Mato Sherman Hooben Elefant | HL Pershing | HL Bergepanzer IV | Tamiya Leopard 1A | WSN T-34 HL "Golden" Pan-Tiger | M16 Halftrack | HL Panzer IV | Tamiya KV-1 | Tamiya Tiger

| Here is the width between the drive sprockets. Looks to be about 4". Here is the size of the sprocket. The tracks will have to be replaced, as the original ones are rubber. Maybe a 1:24 scale track? Here is the with of the front wheels. I'll have it at the next Battleday if you want take a closer look. _____________________________________________ HL Panzer III | HL Tiger | HL Jagdpanther | HL Panther | Mato Sherman Hooben Elefant | HL Pershing | HL Bergepanzer IV | Tamiya Leopard 1A | WSN T-34 HL "Golden" Pan-Tiger | M16 Halftrack | HL Panzer IV | Tamiya KV-1 | Tamiya Tiger

| Derek, that is pretty snug, I'll have to dig up dimensions for the VS tank gears. Good reference though. It'd be better if they tracks did assist in steering, the full scale versions all did. At slight steering angles the front wheels did all of the work but as you steered further, it would apply brake to the inside track. They could no pivot no, hehe, but with front wheels alone you wouldn't be able to steer very much. Wayne, I'm not as sure about Allied vehicles, but the Sd.KFZ 251 was definitely mounted with a 75mm PAK40 anti tank gun, and used in Russia. _____________________________________________ Tiger I - Panzer II - Panzer III - Panzer IV - Chi Nu Kai - Panther G - KV-1b 756(r) M4A3(76) Sherman - T-34/85 - M3 Grant - SECRET PROJECT

| I was on RCU last night Derek and I've been bouncing between build threads trying to get a good sense of gearbox's and steering options... then the dang site went down for at least 2 hours... grr ><
Good to see things are back up!!
Are your static kits both the 21st Century Hanomags?
I like what the DAK build did, basically used all the same drive sprockets but adapted it to use Panzer 3/4 tracks, which are cheap and abundant. I'd want to use the front end assembly from and r/c truck or car for steering though.
From what I've been digging up he used the drive gearbox from the 1/18 Panzer IV which goes for about $100 plus shipping on ebay. Uhg. I think the VS tank gear's will work if we can get the sprockets off. _____________________________________________ Tiger I - Panzer II - Panzer III - Panzer IV - Chi Nu Kai - Panther G - KV-1b 756(r) M4A3(76) Sherman - T-34/85 - M3 Grant - SECRET PROJECT

| Yes, both mine are Centry 21, one is German and the other is American. The guy from DAK did evenationly used parts from a RC car for the front end, but never posted any pictures of it. As for the sprockets on the VS gearboxes, if your not going to reuse them, then cut them off! Just make sure you don't damage the axle. _____________________________________________ HL Panzer III | HL Tiger | HL Jagdpanther | HL Panther | Mato Sherman Hooben Elefant | HL Pershing | HL Bergepanzer IV | Tamiya Leopard 1A | WSN T-34 HL "Golden" Pan-Tiger | M16 Halftrack | HL Panzer IV | Tamiya KV-1 | Tamiya Tiger

| They pry off so it seems, yay! If I can find out for sure if they will fit inside the hull I'll order some up. | I hope so too. If built light-weight they should be just fine in a straight line, and probably handle most turns. I've watched videos of VS tanks zipping across grass better than 1/16's do!
I'm toying with the idea of installing a Pnz4 sprocket (considerably smaller than a Pnz3) with these, its a lot bigger but MIIIIGHT fit. I'll be getting speed at the cost of torque and possibly overloading these little gearbox's. _____________________________________________ Tiger I - Panzer II - Panzer III - Panzer IV - Chi Nu Kai - Panther G - KV-1b 756(r) M4A3(76) Sherman - T-34/85 - M3 Grant - SECRET PROJECT

Hey guys: I am most likely interested in getting the German half track and investigate the possibility of mounting a panther turret or some other gun on it. Go on call me crazy. By the way when Tomzag had his halftrack tank hauler at tank day he had track and wheel control and he made out quite well. Wayne |

| I still think the P3 tracks are best.
