Subject: Strato's HL T-34/85 Wed Feb 19, 2014 11:38 am
Hey guys.
Since I've been trying to even out my axis/allies ratio I've started working on my T-34 I picked up a couple months ago. Still with HL electronics that I hate (HL really dropped the ball on the 2.4ghz system.. more later) but with a pair of steel regular-ratio gearboxes and high speed / torque motors from Tower Hobbies. She's really fast right now!
Eventually going to be full combat with a Clark board & possible Asiatam recoil / elevation unit if one will fit.
Did a whitewash first, then added a lighter green wash and finished with a very light black wash. All acrylic. I like how it turned out as I was actually aiming for an early spring look that was mostly green.
The HL T-34 is not designed for the mid-mounted gearboxes (low profile I guess) that are usually found in the Stug, Panzer 3 & 4. There are two reasons; first off the final drive gear on the 'regular' gearboxes are both on the outside of the tank. The HL T-34 has room for them, but these gearboxes have the final drive gear both on the right-hand side of the tank. The second reason is HL only positioned a mounting post for one type of gears that is blocked by here, so I can't use it.
Strangely enough I noticed the Panzer IV actually has the extra posts in the lower hull so you can mount either style of gearbox. I always wondered why they were there... Not so on the '34 as it seems HL decided to stick with the one that fit best.
Not to be easily discouraged I installed them anyway. Hah!

Now you need to something with the tracks, to new looking. It'll get picked on by the other tanks.

Yea that's a good next step I think. I need to come up with a way to get a nice rusty effect on plastic tracks, not sure my baking soda & enamel rust will stick very well.

Geez you guys are unrelenting in your demands of my progress... hehheh
I mixed up another batch of baking soda, lacquer thinner and Testors rust enamel. This stuff makes awesome rust with texture and dynamic shades. It looks really cool.
I've never used it on a 'running' part so I really have no idea how well it's going to stick to a moving track. It will wear off the contact surface quickly; I just hope it sticks to the rest. The brown looks very dark in the photos but in normal light it's dusty and lighter.

So I'm done with rust and started experimenting with mud!
Elmer's white glue, REAL DIRT, and some blends of brown, black & grey paints...
I like it.

I'm terrible at getting true to colour pictures... but I'm happy with how it looks to my eye!
Mixture of brown and grey mud looks really cool.

Quit staling and take that tank to a car wash or Uncle Joe is going to get mad at you!

Clark board FINALLY installed... and wow does it ever sound awesome in this 'newer' batch of HL tanks. I'm very happy.
Also this thing is a fighter jet. 3:1 steel gears from Rctank.de & upgraded motors... holy jebus murphy. I'm having a very hard time controlling it indoors. It will actually burn donuts

Back at it again! Awhile ago I traded the stock HL hull with the fancy Taigen mostly metal lower.
Metal road wheels w/ bearings, rubber tires, this is the T-34 hull that has gearboxes specifically made for it by Taigen to accommodate the tight quarters of her rear end (hehe..)
I came across some brass mesh and decided to add some spaced armor!
Still has the stock motors so it's not incredibly fast but it moves well for it's weight.
Clark TK-22 Russian, servo recoil & barrel flash.
