PostSubject: Tank Transport Trailer   Tank Transport Trailer Icon_minitimeSun Feb 24, 2013 4:02 pm

For some time now, I have wanted to have a trailer to transport my tanks with. I have set out trying to find a trailer for the past few months now, only to find, no one makes a trailer under a billion dollars (1/16 scale money) that would fit the budget minded person looking for something esthetically pleasing.

I do a little research and find myself ordering a trailer knowing it will not fit the bill as it's too short for my big King Tigers. No Problem I think, I'll order two and chop em up and make one out of it...lol Always easier said than done.

So here is my journey of making my new trailer...

I started with two of these.

The box arrives with my two trailers about a week later and I happily open the box like a kid a christmas to find my shiney two new trailers inside waiting for my frankenstein scapel. Thinking, just how hard can it be, I set out with masking tape to the back of the one trailer, marking off where I needed to cut. Cutting plastic is not as easy as one might think. Unless the blade is going super slow, you melt the plastic more than you do cutting it.

After I have the back cut off the one trailer and now it's more of a melted goo line than a finely cut line, off to the belt sander she goes to try and straighten the mess out. Once a get it close to acceptable levels, I set out on cutting off the back three wheels from the other trailer. I find just the right spot to make my not-so-perfect cut and have at it.

Do you ever do something and after you have done it, you do a "Oh No !". Well, I was kinda at that point when I cut the back off the seond trailer. I took a quick look over at one of my King Tigers and then back at the trailer. "That KT is going to be too dam wide for the trailer" and not by a little bit !

So here I have two perfectly good trailers chopped up that will not do what I wanted to do. Insert big sigh here. As you see in the pic above, I get an epiphany ! Cut the middle slot out of the trailer, chopping the two trailers up one more time, right down the middle. (yes, not for the faint of heart) I figure, at this point, it's all junk anyway, I should at least try to make a go of it.

After measuring the KT, I figured I needed to add three inches to the middle of the trailer. I struggled for a week trying to think of exactly how I was going to do that. My first thought was to use Styrene making a cross beam frame under it. The theory sounded right, I figured it would take me forever to make it happen as I am not as talented as a certain tank builder in Hamilton who has no issue making Indiana Jones freekin tanks...could be anyone.

Next thought was a block of wood. I gave that much consideration and thought of how to attatch the two side, drilling, tapping, naaa, that's not working for me either.

I need something strong to tie everything together yet light. Hmmmm... Aluminum ! That's the ticket. I call up a fab shop and had him make me a piece of aluminum the length I wanted with sides bent into it, (like a U channel) giving me a place to bolt it all together.

First thing I needed to do was glue to two halfs together.

The three wheeler is turning into a 6 wheeler....

Here's what I figure it will look like....

PostSubject: Re: Tank Transport Trailer   Tank Transport Trailer Icon_minitimeSun Feb 24, 2013 5:07 pm

So now I have the 4 pieces epoxied together struggling to keep my 4 uneven sides all lined up (think back to the not so straight goo lines). I picked up the piece of U-channel aluminum and began to drill holes in the side of the channel which I will use to bolt it all together with. As I wite this, all seems to be going according to plan, trust me, nothing further from the truth as nothing lines up as it should and hardware to hold the two sides doesn't seem to be doing it's job.

At one point I mocked it all up and put the KT on it's back as I just couldn't wait to see what it would look like assembled. The one side of the trailer popped off my not so good hardward, flying across the room and poor KT comes crashing to the table top. Note to self, don't get ahead of things and wait to see the finished product until later.

ok, back to bolting it all together. I had designs on bending the aluminum at the rear of the trailer to match the beaver tail. that did't work either as I have nothing to make the bend with. For now, I will line it up at the back of the trailer and cut off the extra length at the front as needed.

here we are so far.
Tank Transport Trailer Dsc_0110

The deck is somewhat uneven because the aluminum is not perfectly square in the corners. I'll deal with that later. One more issue I had was, the tires/rims would not pop off the axles, so I used my dremel and cut the axles in half. I'll just use brass sleeves to make the axle shafts longer too.

Here is it all bolted together with the new brass axle shaft "extenders" in place.

Axles in place, lil glue on the shafts so they don't pop out again and I set about laying some "mother of all epoxies" on the bottom side seams. I know the sides are bolted together but after the last lil mishap, I'm not taking that chance again. Just in case anyone is looking for an awesome epoxy that turns to concrete "lepages marine two part epoxy" the stuff takes a good two hours to dry but you will need a grinder to get it off (don't ask me how I know).

With the epoxy fully dry (the next morning) I just gotta get that KT back up on the trailer to see how it's going to sit, length and width.

Here are the pics.

Tank Transport Trailer Dsc_0112

Tank Transport Trailer Dsc_0113

Even with extending it three inches on the width, the King Tiger has such a fat ass it still barely fits.

I now need to get the front of the trailer back on. As it turns out, that extra section of aluminum at the front will turn out to be a good support from the front section of the trailer. It will also lower the overall height of the front section which in my opinion will look better. I bore a hole through a section of the front section so that it can support the assembly. So as it turns out, it was good that I didn't try and use the aluminum section for the beaver tail.

here are the pics with the nose section sitting in place.

Tank Transport Trailer Dsc_0114

Time to epoxy the topside to lock it all in place and stuff the center section back in the rear for the beavertail.

In this pic, you can see the aluminum supporting the front section and both sides epoxied together. Dying to get some paint on this thing and get rid of some of the yellow. I'm figuring on black paint for the bottom side anyway. Looking to also try out this new ulta flat cammo paint that I posted in another thread. The stuff covers great and seems to stick pretty good to the trailers plastic.

Tank Transport Trailer Dsc_0116

After spending some time grinding down (somewhat flat) the epoxy on the deck, it is my intension to cover up this mess with some genuine fake imitation wood decking. I run down to the hobby shop and grab some 1/2 x 1/16 thick balsa wood. I buy everything they have which is not much and get it back home to see what it will look like. After applying a few strips, it was clear to see I wouldn't have enough, not even close.

Time to get some of that new green cammo paint onto the trailer....goood bye yellow....whhooot
I call the hobby shop back and order a pile more wood for it and will have to wait 7-10 days to get it in. Here is the trailer progess so far.

Tank Transport Trailer Dsc_0117

Yes ! the wood has finally shown up yesterday.
On goes the rest of the wood last night.

Yes, the plan is to use Tamiya Knight Hauler and paint it Cammo Green also. I'll work out the details on the mounting once I get the truck. It might be a bit before I get the truck so I thought I would get the trailer done ahead of time...

Fast forward to about an hour ago...

I have the trailer painted, dug up a buncha junk to put on the trailer, glued cables and tie downs, painted ramps and placed two guards on the trailer to keep watch over my King Tigers.
Here is the final result. Hope you enjoyed my story.

Next time buy a sherman and don't worry about any of this....

Look great Ian!

The only thing I would do is rub so stain into the wood to darken it up a little, but every thing else look excellent.

Dark brown should work, if you want you could give it black wash after if you want it dark and it would weather it a bit too.

sounds like the plan...I agree on the black wash and was probably the reason dark brown wasn't sitting with me. I think with the black wash, it will get the look I was thinking of. Thanks for bringing it up. I iz no good at weathering...will look to the club members for help there.

Looks like you were able to make it wide enough so you could keep the road tracks on your KT.

Good work .
