Hi there!
My name is Robert Marks, and I've just bought a Heng Long T-34 (with 6.0 IR), and I'm rather hoping to find people to have tank battles with in the Eastern Ontario region.
I'm also rather hoping to come and join the battle at the Aquino Tank Weekend in Oshawa in September this year, assuming that is happening, and I was wondering about how to go about doing that and what it would involve.
(For example, do I need to pay a membership fee or register somehow, make any modifications to the tank so that it can play properly with others, etc.?)
Best regards to all,
Robert Marks
PS: For those with children who are interested in tanks, my wife and I discovered that the T-34 can play with the two 1/30 Heng Long tanks we bought when I was first exploring this a few months ago.

No sir, but we do take bribes/donations/etc

As mentioned briefly, the more custom battles use aftermarker controller boards to fight as they are fully programable for armor types and both movement and performance adjustments (Some allow for additional/custom sounds).
At the KW Garrison the aftermarket boards are the norm, at Mississauga field the newer Heng Long controls are popular (They do not fight nicely with most aftermarket boards.)

Well, having only just gotten into this hobby (and on something of a shoestring), I can understand why.
That said, due to geography alone (all of the battlegrounds are at least 3 hours away from us by car), I'm probably limited to the event in Oshawa at the tank museum (and any smaller gatherings arranged in my general area). Is there anybody whose brain I can pick about that (I mean, does participating in the tank battle lower the price of admission, do I need to upgrade the board before I'd be allowed to take the field, etc.)?

Mississauga Field might be your best bet at this point, especially if you are on HL 6.0. All the battles in K/W and Oshawa will be Tamiya Based IR (Tamiya and other after market boards).
Mississauga Field also tends to be a free for all, where K/W (Permanent) and Oshawa (Once a year) is a little more organized because of the standardize IR and field layout etc.

At this point, Mississauga is too far away, so it's something of a no-go.
So, I need an aftermarket board installed (I can probably manage that within nine months). Is there anything else I need to do (sign up sheet, etc.)

We are not that serious......... Unlike say Danville. Much more relax. You just show up and battle ! Just make sure your tank(s) is battle ready that is the tough part for most of us. That's another reason why we all have multiple tanks, aside from the fact that you can't just buy one tank as they just start showing up as many spouse/partner quickly found out.

That's good to know!
One more question, if I may: would I need to pay full price to get into the museum for the battle, or is there a discount or comping of some sort (I ask because I saw elsewhere that participation in the Oshawa battle gets you in for free, but I don't want to make any assumptions)?

Greetings and welcome Robert. We are playing it by ear on the admissions thing for Oshawa. Like all organizations they have been hit hard by COVID so will in all likelihood be cutting down on freebies. I will send you some info on the upgrade questions you are asking shortly...

Looks like I was wrong about that - well, I'm planning to be there with my wife and daughter anyway to check out the tanks, even if I don't get to play in the RC tank battle.

I hadn't even considered the possibility of borrowing a tank. Any chance of getting one with a pink angler fish on the turret?
Question: is the only RC stuff happening there the battle, or is there some other fun with RC tanks as well that I might be able to bring my T-34 for?

We have some skill drills/races that are a relatively new addition

So my T-34 might get to play after all - wonderful!
Next question: do I need to have paid a membership to either the K/W or Mississauga clubs to attend, or am I good just coming as a free agent (for lack of a better term while my morning coffee kicks in)?

Lets see what Oshawa has up their sleeve for us closer to the date. We don't know arrangements yet...
We always do some kind of donation to the cause but lets wait and see...

So, funny thing about naming a Russian tank...I decided to name my tank "Wolf" (wolves are my favourite animal), and so I used Google translate to find the Russian world for wolf and wrote it on my T-34.
The Russian word for "wolf" is "волк" - so my tank has now picked up the nickname "Bonk" in my family.

Should have gone with Боевая подруга. And then not told your wife what it means.

I don't know...I think there's something goofily endearing about a T-34 named Wolf and nicknamed "Bonk."
