The washes are enamel, so make sure to use acrylic colours for your base/ camo coat.
If you screw up, or put too much wash down in certain areas, you can always take it off with Mig wash thinner without harming your acrylic colours.
You can also use the thinner to make realistic whitewash streaks, like your tank has seen some heavy rain. I believe whitewash was water based in real life, so it would often come off in wet conditions.

I highly recommend Mig/AK Interactive's magazine called The Weathering Magazine. It's only about 6 bucks an issue, and you can download it digitally to your iPhone or computer.
It'll give you some amazing tips for, dust, rust, wash and earth effects.

If you are looking for white coverage you will have to use an acrylic white or white artist oils.
If using acrylic, make sure to put an enamel clear coat down first in case you want to remove white in certain areas. Search around, there are lots of articles and videos about whitewashes.

Here's a quick pic of a winter wash I did a while ago with white acrylic. It might be a little heavy, but it was the look I was going for.
