PostSubject: Strato50's M3 GRANT   Strato50's M3 GRANT Icon_minitimeFri Sep 25, 2015 10:04 am

Well as some of you have known and possibly got a peek at I've been steadily grinding away at a Grant, and I've decided to begin the build thread Very Happy

For starters, the kit is resin and included hatches, both guns and turret, rear panel and exhaust / air filters. Fit and finish is normal for a resin mold and I really had no major issues. There was a bit of hull warping but I have it secured nice and tight. The kit was ordered from a fellow in Hungary who was advertising on the Facebook group "World Rc Tank Community"

Now for the interesting bit.. The turret I had made for me by an RCU member who is into 3D printing. You may have seen a few links posted here regarding his builds, including a functional Panzer I. I'm really impressed with his work, which includes the mantlet, entire gun elevation assembly, two piece turret & a fully functional turret rotation gear. All 3D printed. I really couldn't imagine a better, stronger or cleaner way to do this.

Anyhoo, pictures!

Turret rotation is planned to be on a continual rotation micro servo, modified to run on regular DC current powered by a HL / Clark board. No plans to put the 75mm gun on servos as I hope to have the 37mm fully functional in time. I'm not a grand master... yet Wink

Extra points if anyone can identify the specific tank I'm attempting to represent!

Fantastic Jordan. Rare as hell. Too bad about the Lee turret as that looks quite good as well.

Dean I know your ears aren't amazing but how the heck did you spot that? Razz

Now I'm wondering about making the different doors and hatches work, or just to stick them on. I'll figure it out.

I might just have to get one of these for myself........ Jordan, are you planning on replacing/replicating the Sherman with early version of the road bogies ? I remember seeing 3D versions of them from one of Dean's link but they were expensive.

Mike, your google skills are strong.... Razz Hopefully I'll be able to replicate the markings with some accuracy, something I haven't invested a lot of skill into before.

Also what's with Russians and turning anything they find into monsters?!

Did a bit more work.

Took a dremel sanding drum to my poor Sherman tracks.. actually turned out fairly well. Now to source some rubber..

Bit more progess!

Mounted the original Sherman turret rotation gearbox directly to the turret roof. Used 3 drops of CA glue... so it's semi permanent but can be removed if need be. Now the gunners hatch on top of the tank opens up to reveal the silver can motor... oh well! Razz

The gears actually mesh well; Woz supplied a matching gear with his printed turret ring but for now I won't really need it. I will if I decide to go with a larger servo rotation unit in the future.

Also did some painting! I suck a this part but for a guy lacking any kind of stencil or airbrush I think I do ok... Razz

Wow looks amazing Jordan. Is that the 75mm that came with the kit ? I thought it was a bit longer than that, but now it looks just right on our tank. Did you just end up getting a short shaft low profile gear set ? Will you be doing any rotation/elevation on the 75mm ?

I'll answer in order! Yes. Yes, yes! Yes & maybe... Wink  viking

I haven't changed the barrel length it's just currently sitting deeper inside the tank. Everything except Burma Lee's had about this length of barrel +- a few inches & the counterweight.

I took one of the many leftover crap-metal gearboxes I have laying around and sawed off all the bits that were in the way, which was mostly both 'forward' slopes & the very tops of the gearbox. I had a crappy wobble-gear in one so I stuck in a plastic gear... which I also did with the matching gearbox. Very quiet now!!

Strato50's M3 GRANT 20151012_005713_zpshxxdkqrp

The 75mm gun I can most easily do via servo control directly to channel 5+6 of any regular radio & just flip switches for movement. No current plans to ARM that gun but it's entirely possible.. Very Happy

Making some progress again.

Added the Bridage emblems, aka Dimetrodon Nike Fireworks lizard / Boomerang Crocodile Palm tree / Australian 4th Armored Brigade.

Strato50's M3 GRANT 20151018_121249_zpskfyohsx6

The painstaking task of cutting and gluing 170+ rubber track pads actually wasn't so bad & it only took about 2 hours. The foam is pretty dense but it will eventually chip, wear and slice over very rough ground just like the real thing. It might give me problems over thick grass too so this might end up being a road preference tank.
