OK As you guys may know I acquired the LAV III watercannon that was present at Aquino and other pubic events over the past few years.

I am beginning the process of complete rebuilding of the unit from the driveline up. I purchased a 6x6 WPL truck to get the frame rails and axles to start the project.

LAV III - Rebuild Project Lav-ii10
Initial concept of drive line... Front two axles will steer, but only the front will be powered.  It will be a 6x8 vehicle (6 drive wheels of 8 present)

LAV III - Rebuild Project Lav-ii12
Rough driveline framework. Just needing to get another steering axle...

LAV III - Rebuild Project Lav-ii11
Showing how the steering will look once another axle.

LAV III - Rebuild Project Lav-ii13
The lower hull removed and wheels from the original LAV.

LAV III - Rebuild Project Lav-ii14
Rough layout for the axles and frame.

A small bit of progress (Thanks to Chris! Axles were great!)

LAV III - Rebuild Project 12161810
Still unsure If I'll reused the old water tank. It fits. Barely!

LAV III - Rebuild Project 12162810
Yes that is a "full size" spare tire now used as the water cap for the tank portion. I think it looks good.

LAV III - Rebuild Project 12167010
How it looks with the upper hull loosely put into place. RAR!

Steering is in concept stage currently. Going to be playing with track rod designs and drag links soon. Trying to get driveline space claiming done first. Need a second motor/gearbox for the rear axles.

Glad you can use them! I see a fully printed frame. Are you still using the rails or are they gone?

The axles use m2x30 machine screws yo be bolted directly to the rail channel. 3D Floor sitting in upturned C-channel rails and screwed into place from below.

LAV III - Rebuild Project Pb040911
Adding in the 2nd servo for steering.

LAV III - Rebuild Project Pb040912
Rough concept placement for the 2nd drive motor (Mounted one with heat sink drives the front wheels)

LAV III - Rebuild Project Pb040910
Steering linkage under the chassis

LAV III - Rebuild Project Pb040913
Again rough concept of the existing water tank space claiming. It is a VERY tight fit... May need to be modified.

LAV III - Rebuild Project Pb040914
Side shot showing the height. I may also need to use Heng Long rotation units due to possible interference fron the new drive motors.

Showing the conceptual test of steering with a "final linkage solution"

The driveline test! Both motors hooked up to a 6V battery pack (4xAA). You can see the tails of the Z-bends in the steering linkage video above. Forgot to trim them and they fit right into the universal joints of the driveline. (Whoops. Now trimmed down Smile

LAV III - Rebuild Project Empty
PostSubject: Re: LAV III - Rebuild Project   LAV III - Rebuild Project Icon_minitimeWed Mar 24, 2021 10:52 am

Been awhile since an update (Been working on Dean PoS Hooben Hetzer and making it a Good Hooben Hetzer…)
I wasn't happy with the original "floor" for mounting components onto (4 sections) So I redesigned the entire mounting system.
Yes I 3D modelled everything I was building... Lower section is now a 6 piece affair with built in motor mounts.

LAV III - Rebuild Project Hull_d10
3D Model of everything below the original toy hull. There are eighteen 2mmx10 screws holding the wheel-wells to the main floor. Another eight 3mm screws securing the frame rails to the base of the floors. Servos install underneath, also screwed in. This is the initial prototype design.

LAV III - Rebuild Project New_hu10
This is the revised front side walls. 2 pieces that took another 13 hours to print. In ABS and tough as nails...

LAV III - Rebuild Project New_hu11
All the lower rails/driveline installed. You can see the screw heads for all the 3D printed ABS. Only one drive axle left to replace with metal version.

LAV III - Rebuild Project New_hu13
Both motors mounted. Friction fit with side retaining screws that are accessible if tires are removed.

LAV III - Rebuild Project New_hu14
How the original hull fits onto the new lower hull components.... There will be a dozen 2mm bolts and nuts securing these together (not sure if I am going to epoxy the old hull to the new ABS parts... At least not yet....

LAV III - Rebuild Project New_hu12
Another angle showing how the 3D interfaces with the old toy hull.

PostSubject: Re: LAV III - Rebuild Project   LAV III - Rebuild Project Icon_minitimeWed Mar 24, 2021 11:08 am

Water tank will be made by me and be located completely in the upper hull. Why? Because the original water tank doesn't fit the new lower hull (Nor do I want to compromise the design). The new tank will also distribute water over more road wheels to allow for a better torque distribution...
It still may not move if full of water, but we'll see...
Also likely means a new water pump will be required as the old peristaltic pump is way too large... (Maybe...)

I've also scavenged and installed a HL rotation unit for turret rotation. Anyone have a stubby/short 2S battery pack they want to donate for this project?
